Despite the never ending vagaries of the weather with river levels up and down like a yo-yo, there is a good stock of both salmon and sewin in the Western.
During the last fortnight, anecdotal reports suggest that over 40 sewin have been caught and upwards of 5 salmon, one of which was a double figure fish.
In particular this lovely sewin was landed by Paul Houghland. In his own words:
After a long day in work I thought I’d give the river a bash with the tenkara rod for trout, I gave the dry a go for about 1/2 hour no luck. Then a big sewin splashed in the pool, I thought about heading back to the car for the sea trout gear but I didn’t want to miss the chance. It was still quite light 9.45pm so I tied on a Rosebush wet fly with a bit of flash in it size 12. Second cast I had a thundering take and a heart stopping fight I thought my little wand was going to snap. Eventually I landed a fresh run 5lb 10oz sewin.
There have also been reports of very big fish being hooked and lost. Good fish have also been caught on our lower beats of the Eastern (Llawhaden and Trewynt).
